You need to listen to Stephen King!
Okay, not Stephen King specifically...but audiobooks of his novels! In the hands of a good narrator, King's stories, which are already great, reach a whole other level.
Here are 2 titles that I highly recommend:
Pet Semetary, narrated by Michael C Hall: this is one of those stories that you should just listen to without too much context. Yes, some of the references are dated, but at the heart of it all, this is a story of love in all of its forms and all that it can do. Michael C Hall (who played Dexter in...Dexter) does an awesome job bringing the various characters to life. My wife and I spent many nights hunched over a portable speaker, in our bedroom with lights turned off, listening till we got to the end.
It, narrated by Steven Weber: you may have seen the movie, but that's really just the CliffsNotes version of the story. You need to listen to the book. This is one long book, which takes a while to find its feet, but it's worth it. Weber is able to embody the very large cast of characters and do justice to King's characterisation. And as with the previous book, my wife and I are making our way through this book most nights.
In short: if you want a short read, listen to Pet Sematary. If you have time for a longer one, go for It.
