You can still start in February

This January passed by in a flash and I often felt like I was struggling to catch up.

I usually try to set some intentions for the year sometime in January, but that didn’t happen this year. I suppose the one thing that I started on is going back to the gym after having taken a long break. Still there’s been a tussle between two parts: a part of me that’s anxious about not letting the year get away from me and another part of me that can’t seem to bring itself to plan.

Then I come across this post by Austin Kleon which brought some light. Kleon, writes about how he felt like his year hadn’t started yet and he couldn’t really bring himself to do much. I mean, this is a guy who is a successful artist and writer! It helped me feel less alone in feeling the way I did.

The hopeful part of his post is when he says that there are many points we can choose to start our year. He brought up cultural markers like Lunar New Year (Feb) and the Iranian New Year (Mar). There’s also the Tamil New Year (April). I don’t mean to say that we need to wait till these events but the point is that January is just a date. There’s always a group of people somewhere starting something at some point!

For me, I’m going to try to capitalise on February – the shortest month with 4 clean weeks. I’ve been having an itch to try my hand at illustration but have not been able to especially with a part of me feeling like I can’t do anything more than misshapen stick figures. Kleon suggests making use of the month to start a 28-day challenge. IMG_5698

I don’t know how my year will turn out but it can’t be a bad thing to spend 28 days on practising drawing. I’m not sure where I’ll end up but I’ll trust that I’ll suck less.
