Why confidence men succeed

Perhaps it is something that everyone knew but me, but I’m starting to realise that confidence counts for A LOT more than competence. Ideally, competence leads to confidence. But even faking confidence well can help you be seen as competent, as someone who “knows what they’re talking about”.

I can see where this is helpful. But I’m also concerned about when confidence is backed up by nothing. Because in those times, it can be hard to see through this illusion of confidence (and competence). I suppose this is why confidence men are a thing.

Question: how do you discern competence-based competence from Trump-confidence?
