What’s the point if it ain’t fun?
When I hear writers and artists in the comics industry speak, it’s often with a sense of possibility, adventure, and most of all — fun!
One of my favourite creators, Daniel Warren Johnson, had this to say in an episode of Off Panel with host David Harper:
DH: How much of a driver for you is fun?
DWJ: A lot. I mean like 90%, 100%. I don't know. I mean, I really like to have my cake and eat it too. So like I'm a firm believer in being able to say something that hopefully matters while also having the maximum amount of fun.
Later in the interview he talks about how the work itself is already hard, and if he doesn’t find fun in what he’s doing, it would be too much.
(This comes from someone in an industry many associate with silly pictures and words. )
But it made me think, how different would things be for you and me, if we actively incorporated fun in our lives? Either we work on fun things, or find the things we’re working on fun!
Now wouldn’t that be a corrective to our cultural swings between overconsumption and boredom?
