What do winter sports have to do with an islander?
Being from a tropical island, to me, winter sports seem like they belong on another planet.
But I’ve found myself feeling inspired by the recently concluded Winter Olympics 2026! There were 2 athletes who I’ve enjoyed watching.
While reading the news, I came across Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, a Norwegian cross-country skier who has won…13 medals, of which 11 are gold medals!🏅 What wowed me the most was when I saw a clip of him sprinting up an uphill portion during the Olympics and everyone else was struggling to keep up. Apparently he stumbled on his sprint technique because he was having issues with his skis?!
American figure skater, Alysa Liu was also dazzling on ice. Her free skating routine seemed so effortless and joyful. Being able to reach that level of mastery and ease is truly awe-inspiring. And at 20, Liu is still so young, with so much ahead of her!
Ice and snow are things I don’t experience in Singapore, but I surely can appreciate the value of (winter) sports in expanding our collective horizons.
