Think of your readers
One thing I started doing on that book that I've just continued doing is that I will pencil all of my pages as spreads so that I can see two pages next to each other at the same time, because that's the reader experience. Then that in turn has made what I'm writing, think about the page turn constantly. I'm always trying to make sure that any new information is hidden on that next page, and not on page two of the spread — Erica Henderson on Off Panel: A Comics Interview Podcast
In the podcast Henderson, an award-winning cartoonist emphasises how she thinks about the reader's experience when they hold one of her books in their hands. Readers see two pages at once in the case of graphic novels and that for creators, that poses its own challenges, yes, but also brings opportunities to play with the medium.
Writing here, I do try to think about my potential readers. But Henderson's example now inspires me to see how far I can push this, while remaining true to myself.
