The clocks strike thirteen
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen — George Orwell, 1984
As part of a book club, I’ve recently been re-reading 1984. It’s eerie how so much of what is in there resonates with what’s there in the world around us. I’ve been enjoying both in terms of how Orwell crafts a compelling story and also the ideas he confronts you with.
Case in point, take the opening line quoted at the start. 1 line. 14 words. And that’s enough to create a sense of unease that only deepens as the novel progresses.
