Stop waiting for someone else to do it

I was out today looking for a Fairy Pitta that had been sighted in Singapore. I had never seen one before and I’ve got a soft spot for pittas, so I was really excited.

There were many birders there, camera in hand. But many were just standing around and chatting. Only a few people were peering intently to see if they could spot anything. When some birders spotted the Fairy Pitta, the rest of the group stopped their conversations and rushed to the spot.

Having been at a few of these, I’ll say that this mindset is not uncommon.

Someone else will do it

It’s easier to wait for someone to spot the bird.

(But this is not only about birding. We are incentivised to find the easy way out.)

It’s easier to wait for someone else to figure out the direction.

It’s easier to wait for someone to solve the problem.

It’s easier to wait for someone else to take charge.

It’s not like this approach doesn’t make sense. It does – when you don’t have the expertise or experience in something. (I wouldn’t take charge of a brain surgery.)

But if all we do is wait for someone else, then are we might just end up waiting all our lives.

Easier doesn’t mean better.

If you see a need for change, stop waiting for someone else to do it. Don’t just complain.

Start.
