Mission Singapore Comic Con: Success!
Singapore Comic Con 2025 was a really cool experience!
I used to think that no big names would come all the way down to Singapore with its small comics scene. But I realised that this isn’t true! I heard about SGCC by accident at a local comic store and decided to take a look at the guest list. To my amazement, there were definitely a number of creators I wanted to meet — and I got to do that today!
I met a number of my favourite artists and writers:
- Sean Phillips, an amazing artist whose work I’ve followed for a long time and was one of the main reasons for me to want to attend. My wife and I commissioned a sketch of our dog which he was game enough to try despite it not being his usual subject matter. He later told us that he started out doing pet portraits but hadn’t done any for over 30 years!
- Jacob Phillips, son of Sean Phillips who inherited his father’s artistry but has stamped his own mark. Really nice guy who took time to speak to me and share his process.
- Phillip Kennedy Johnson, a writer who I first came across in Superman: Warworld Saga which portrayed a hopeful and optimistic Superman (who was the source of many quotes that I took down)! Apparently he has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel for a few years, but he gave my wife and I a teaser for an upcoming creator-owned project of his! Our lips are sealed. A real down-to-earth person to talk to.
- Chris Condon, whose take on Green Arrow skilfully melded social commentary without a superhero story, yet kept it engaging and not-preachy. He was also nice enough to sign a copy of his book even though we didn’t pay for it!
They say don’t meet your heroes, but these guys were more than alright ;)
We also got to discover some artists/creators who we hadn’t really known much about! Some of whom include:
- Freely Abrigo, a Filipino artist from whom we got some cute superhero stickers. He has an interesting chibi art style.
- Dr Rocke, who started out as a tattoo artist before moving into comics. Apparently of the Turtles, he’s a Leonardo but is partial to The Last Ronin’s Michelangelo. Got a Leonardo print as a gift for a family member.
- Zainal Danial, a Malaysian artist from whom we bought a few prints that were really value-for-money. Really nice guy who gave us one of his works for free because my wife said she liked it! That definitely left an impression :)
- Moshicat, a local creator who as the name suggests had a lot of cute cat stuff! Got my wife, who loves cats, a cute keychain.
- Cleathercrafts, a Singapore based creator from whose we got postcards featuring local wildlife and some quirky fabric coasters
And we’re not done yet! Day 2 awaits and there are more creators to discover and support!
