Let them love what they love

Previously, I wrote about letting yourself love what you love without feeling embarrassed or ashamed of your taste. As long as what you like doesn't harm someone else, you do you.

There is also another angle to this — letting others love what they love, without a need to rain on their parade. On the Internet especially there is often a tendency to sneer at those who like things that you cannot stomach. Gatekeeping is also a real menace — e.g. "you don't know what real cinema is".

But...why?

Why do we need to crap on other people's likes?

Why do we need to feel better about our tastes by attacking others'?

Why diminish sparks of joy that might mean something?

I'm not saying that we should unthinkingly love everything. That's not going to happen.

Taste is subjective. There are going to be things that make you want to puke. And that's okay. It's also okay if your vomit-inducing thing is the NO.1 FAVOURITE THING of someone else.

What do we lose by letting them love what they love?
