Each rep gets you closer
I recently wrote about how training with barbells allows me to practise pushing past my limits. As I put myself under a bar weighted with plates at the squat rack today, I heard this inner dialogue within me:
- Part A: Wow that’s heavy. And you’re already tired. You sure you’ll be okay?
- Part B: You can do it, just maintain your form throughout.
- Part A: Are you sure?
- Part B: Yes, let’s get in position and let’s do it. Proceeds to lift and complete the set *Part A: I always knew we could do it!
Something similar happens each time on each set and rep. I think this is where the repetition of succeeding despite my doubts helps me to build the confidence in my ability to lift. There are reps for everything, not just weightlifting, but each rep done well gets us closer to excellence.
