Do I really need this?
I just started at my new job and have been planning my office desk setup.
One thing I've been considering, because I've heard so much about it is... a mechanical keyboard.
I hear that it allows for a more satisfying typing experience. It's also supposed to help with typing speed and accuracy too.
But as I read more, I see that there are way too many options. Switches, keycaps, high/low profile etc. I could spend an eternity going down this rabbit hole, trying to optimise my setup, but forgetting that it was supposed to help not hinder my productivity.
A question that comes up: do I really need this? Or is this mimetic desire?
The options before me seem to be:
- Purchase a good enough mechanical keyboard (and commit to not fiddling with it)
- Purchase a well-reviewed keyboard like the Logitech MX Keys
- Purchase a cheap keyboard (mechanical or otherwise) for a start
At the end of the day, what actually matters?
