Communities that feel like communities

The big social media platforms don't create a sense of community.

Instagram. TikTok. Facebook. YouTube. (Maybe to a smaller extent, Reddit too). They end up becoming places where people just shout at each other or into the void.

But there are still spaces, smaller spaces you can go to, where I still feel a sense of community exists. Here are 3:

  1. BearBlog: Yes, this is cheating. If you're reading this, you already know.
  2. Letterboxd: If you love movies, this is the place to be. It still feels like a place where people who love movies can gather, exchange recommendations, read each other's thoughts, and encounter new movies.
  3. League of Comic Geeks: A place for comic lovers to gather. Similar to Letterboxd in feel and purpose. Of course you're not going to agree with all views, but it feels real and the views of members feel sincere and not curated.

The Internet still has welcoming and warm spaces. The challenge is finding these nuggets, amidst the torrent of slop.
