Be bored more

We reach for our devices when we feel bored: opening multiple tabs, scrolling endlessly through our feeds, or diving into rabbit holes that bring us all over.

But science tells us that resorting to dealing with boredom by seeking dopamine hits is a fool's errand. Our bodies build tolerance, and eventually normal pleasures like watching a sunset or reading a book becomes bland.

The counter-intuitive solution to be less bored is....to be more bored. But getting through that initial phase is the challenging part. When our brains are readjusting to this dopamine-lite situation, negative emotions that had previously been suppressed finally resurface, and that can be overwhelming. If you prepare for this beforehand, together with the knowledge that it lasts for a week or two, you're good.
