Actors as politicians
There is one thing in common between the US and Tamil Nadu, the sixth most populous state in India. They both had and have elected leaders who were actors.
- US: Reagan and Trump (The Apprentice, anyone?)
- Tamil Nadu: MGR, Jayalalitha, and now Vijay
I’m curious what about actors gives people the confidence that they know how to run a country? Especially in Tamil Nadu, actors and politicians are often raised to god-like status.
The latest entry in this list, Vijay, brought in the most votes in the recent Tamil Nadu elections. He beat most predictions by experts who thought the most he could be was a spoiler for the 2 established parties.
That is something indeed. I suppose it speaks to the level of dissatisfaction with the incumbent. But the real test awaits — how well will the state be run?
