A non-drawer learns to draw: Week 4

As of 28 Feb, I’ve completed my 28 day drawing challenge!

Here are the sketches from this last week:

IMG_6415 A short birding comic strip.

IMG_6416 Trying to have fun with shapes during practice.

IMG_6417 A simple strip to practise some perspective and panel use.

IMG_6418 More shapes.

IMG_6419 A decent house that gave me a sense of satisfaction.

IMG_6420 More shapes and perspective mini-experiments.

IMG_6421 I was trying to experiment with characters interacting across panels. Not sure why it turned out as morbid as it did!

IMG_6422 All I could manage was line and shape practice today.

IMG_6424 The BFG! I don’t think I got the head shape fully right but hey it felt nostalgic.

IMG_6425 Another BFG sketch copied from the illustrations in the book. The seeming lack of detail got me to try, but I realised small strokes can really make a difference.

So 28 days of drawing, not from any particular syllabus but working on what caught my eye and felt doable to me. I do feel a sense of achievement because I now have gathered evidence that it’s not that I can’t draw. I can’t draw well, yet. But relatively speaking, I can’t feel that my lines and shapes are better than they were at the start. I feel a greater sense of confidence and control now. It was all possible because I accepted that my drawings will suck, and that it’s okay! (I mean I’m putting these drawings up publicly, even as I know they aren’t great, but that’s the point!)

I guess there are more lessons I can draw from this but for now I’ll just end by saying I’ll continue with my drawing practice for another month and see where that takes me!

Oh and perhaps it’s time I remove the “non” from my self-description, and just call myself a drawer!

P.S. If you have any suggestions or advice on my drawing journey, let me know through my guestbook or contact page!
